Child poverty unit abolished

The unit was to support ministers in exercising their duties in relation to the income-related targets set out in the Child Poverty Act 2010 and the associated child poverty strategy. It has been a cross-departmental and particularly a Treasury priority so it has been of real value in having the child poverty unit working across the Treasury, Department of Education and DWP from day one.

Chief Executive, Alison Garnham from Child Poverty Action Group feels that this move will downgrade the unit’s status and weakens it reach, influence and effectiveness right across government.

Kathy Evans, the Chief Executive of Children England feels that the DWP is responsible for many of the policies that have made child poverty rise to 3.9 million children and that the unit had responsibility for ending child poverty but the DWP are actually creating it
