Inspectors concerned about staff shortages in Youth prisons

HM Inspectorate of Prisons Children in Custody 2016–17 report shows an analysis of 12–18-year-olds’ perceptions of their experiences in secure training centres and young offender institutions. They showed concerned that young people in custody are being locked up in their cells for too long (some as many as 22 hours) and that they are missing out on vital support due to staff shortages across the secure estate. They are also struggling to have access to showers and using the phone and violence continues to be a major concern.
