LGA seek more powers for LA’s to oversee home schooling

Following a recent critical Ofsted report the Local Government Association (LGA) wants action to tackle illegal schools and to help monitor the quality of home schooling. LGA wants the government to change the legislation to enable local authority officers to act on illegal schools and enter homes to check that a suitable education is provided. Currently they can only enter premises if they have concerns about a child’s safety.

"The vast majority of parents who home educate their children do a fantastic job, and work well with their local council to make sure that a good education is being provided”, said Richard Watts, chair of the LGA's children and young people board.
