Kings Lynn & West Norfolk – Neglect Training
We continued to work together with colleagues in Kings Lynn & West Norfolk to deliver 3 x 1 day bespoke neglect training sessions to a wide range of colleagues working in a variety of services, with a diverse mix of roles, knowledge and experience. These included, managers and teams from housing, environmental health, community safety, help hubs and sport & leisure services.
Sessions gave the opportunity to develop knowledge and understanding of what neglect is and how it happens, exploring in a very practical way the signs and symptoms of neglect and how we can recognise them within our day to day roles. Group discussions and case studies helped to develop further awareness of the impact of neglect (including Adverse Childhood Experiences) giving space to reflect on the complexity of family life, the place of neglect within this and the way we can use our professional curiosity to enhance our practice.
The different roles and experiences within the group, enabled learning to be applied to practice using internal processes and systems, within a local context and highlighting the part that everyone plays to ensure that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, regardless of role.
Challenges in embedding this approach within current systems. cultures and ways of working were identified with time, capacity and working in partnership with other teams and services, being the areas requiring further conversations and development in order to embed this way of working. Participants left the course committed to actioning to drive positive change across the organisation.
