London Borough of Newham - Multi-agency skills training
Interface were commissioned to deliver a 3-day program on Trauma Informed Practice and Motivational Interviewing to multi-agency staff from the London Borough of Newham. The course introduced learners to key concepts and to explore how each area applied to practice. The course included case examples and current themes relevant to Early Help, Youth Offending, Social Services and School staff.
Learning Objectives
Motivational Interviewing
- To understand the style and principles which underpin Motivational Interviewing.
- To develop an understanding and practice the core skills used in MI.
- To consider assessing stages of change and working in the most effective way with each, using MI.
- To understand and develop skills to work with resistance.
- To plan for sessions and work with children and families using MI.
Trauma Informed Practice
- Recognise what trauma is
- Understand what Trauma Informed Practice is
- Gain awareness of how trauma manifests
- Appreciate the values and principles that underlie Trauma Informed Practice and why they are important
- Understand the four principles of TIP – Recognise, Respond, avoid Re traumatisation, build Resilience
- Understand what Trauma Informed Practice looks like
- Consider helpful responses around offering choice, collaboration, trust, empathy and providing safety
Learners Feedback
- As a Social Worker it is important to use this approach to understand how people may present as they do.
- Try to use some of the techniques from the course to motivate families to make positive changes.
