Norfolk Safeguarding Children's Board - Child Sexual Abuse

As part of a wide package of training for Norfolk Safeguarding Children's Board we are delivering a multi-agency one day course both 'face to face' and 'virtually'.

The course aims to provide participants with research and practice-based information to enable them to effectively work with children and families where there is identified child sexual abuse.

The bespoke Learning Objectives include:

  • Demonstrating an understanding of how sexual abuse of children is viewed by society and within a familial context.
  • Understanding that sexual abuse of children is a dynamic risk which professionals and families can affect/intervene with and which can occur within a family or outside, and can also be perpetrated by children (which is Harmful Sexual Behaviour).
  • Recognising and assess the impact of sexual abuse on children’s welfare, development and behaviour and how trauma can manifest itself.
  • Recognising the difficulties for children in disclosing that sexual abuse has taken place.
  • Knowing how to support and respond when such disclosures are made.
  • Developing an understanding of predisposing factors which might make a child or young person vulnerable to CSA
  • Being able to recognise the impact on children and family dynamics when child sexual abuse in the family becomes known.
  • Being able to confidently risk assess and safety plan in CSA cases.
  • Having practiced creating safety plans which build on the Signs of Safety approach.

Learner Feedback

The course was evaluated as Good/Excellent in content and delivery by all learners.

Verbatim feedback included:

"I know that you can have open and 'curious' discussions with young people, rather than being worried to talk about things with them."

"I will use the grounding techniques to help children who have suffered trauma, to help them cope when talking about their experiences. Regularly check in with the child/siblings to check how they are coping/how they are feeling/if they are OK."
