The Calico Group - Introduction to Motivational Interviewing:

This one day course set out to give learners an overview of the key principles and techniques used within a Motivational Interviewing approach.  We explored the origins of Motivational Interviewing before using the cycle of change model to apply key skills such as the use of questions, reflective listening and how to respond to resistance.  This interactive day was a pleasure to deliver and what started as a one off test day has lead to a number of groups undertaking the course with further dates planned for 2025!

 

Learning Objectives:

Understand what MI is and the style and basic principles.

  • Understand why we use, and practice the core techniques of using open questions, affirmations, reflective listening and summaries
  • Learn how to identify stages of change and consider the most/least useful MI approaches in each stage.
  • Consider how to extract DARN (desire, ability, reason and need to change) and CAT (Commitment, Activation and Taking steps)
  • Understand the best MI approaches to dealing with resistant behaviours.
