West Sussex, Assessment, Analysis and SMART Planning
We developed and delivered a three-day program to the current cohort of Newly Qualified Social Workers in West Sussex. The authority was looking for programme to support their NQSWs to develop the skills needed to write effective assessments and analysis, leading to SMART planning and intervention.

- The child’s voice, journey and lived experience will be clearly heard and understood within assessment and analysis.
- All aspects of the child and families lived experience, and identity will be considered through an Equality, Diversity and Inclusion lens.
- The impact for the child of parental behaviours and environmental factors will be clearly articulated within assessments in identifying risk, strengths, and what change is needed to support better outcomes and why.
- Links are made to consider the child’s current and previous experiences using chronologies, and the impact for them.
- Information will be critically assessed and analysed to inform hypothesis, planning, decision making and practice
- Plans to be SMART, realistic and made in collaboration with families
- All aspects of Assessment, Planning and Review to use strengths based and trauma-informed language
