Dr Marianna Tortell

Marianna is a violence against women and girls (VAWG) specialist, with 30 years’ experience as a CEO, independent consultant and trainer, and leader of a local authority VAWG response. Her work has spanned the UK, Malta, and Aotearoa/New Zealand.

Marianna was previously CEO of Domestic Violence Intervention Project, Interim CEO of Galop, Performance Co-ordinator at Rape Crisis England and Wales, and Deputy Chief Executive of nia. As an independent consultant, she has worked on a number of projects, including setting up North London Rape Crisis at Solace Women’s Aid, service evaluations for specialist VAWG third sector organisations, and providing expert reports for immigration solicitors in cases involving sexual violence, domestic violence and LGBT identity. She also spent a number of years as an accreditation assessor of domestic violence perpetrator interventions for Respect and a member of the BBC Children in Need grants committee.

Marianna also has experience working in the local authority setting as Manager of the London Borough of Waltham Forest VAWG Team. In this capacity, she co-led on the development and implementation of a ground breaking approach to VAWG work within a local authority.

Marianna is currently Co-Chair of the End Violence Against Women Coalition, and was previously Chair of Stonewall Housing.

Marianna completed her PhD in Gender Studies at Warwick University in 2001
