Ceredigion Council asked us to run a workshop looking at the impact of parental substance misuse on children and young people. The session was attended by a range of professionals, from foster carers, social workers, school staff and youth workers. The workshop included quiz-time, case examples, presentations and reflective group time.
We spent time exploring the research evidence that suggests different impact on different age groups from different substance types, including alcohol use when pregnant. We explored different techniques to ensure we understand the child’s world in such families and we also looked at a tool/technique for facilitating and assessing change.
The workshop was able to draw together the principles of the need for knowledgeable workers, who are non-judgmental and are able to include children, young people and family members in finding their own solutions where possible.
