Childhood obesity to be tackled by new trailblaze projects

The Department of Health has announced it will fund five councils to support the development of new ways to tackle child obesity.

Initially 12 Councils will be asked to put forward plans to reduce childhood obesity in their area with 5 of these then being chosen to receive £100,000 a year for three years. These councils will act as Trailblazers with successful results then fed back to be included in national anti-childhood obesity policies.

With NHS data suggesting nearly a quarter of children in England are obese by the time they reach school age the initiative is intended to help the government reach its target to reduce childhood obesity by half by 2030.
