Children’s Social Care becomes the main source of referral to council homelessness teams.

As the number of reports of homelessness increases, children’s social workers have become the main source of homelessness referrals.

Whilst the National Probation Service had historically provided the largest number of referrals, figures for April to June 2019 show the children’s services have now taken over with 17.1 per cent of the 4,340 cases reported coming from that source.

A total of 127,370 children are now reported to be living in temporary accommodation, representing 61,800 families, though this figure is slightly down from the number recorded the previous quarter. The number housed in bed and breakfast accommodation has, however, risen to 1,990 families with 690 of these staying for more than the statutory six-week limit.
