Devolved budgets to be handed directly over to social workers to help support families

New pilot schemes aimed at reducing the need for children to be taken into care are being launched and will see social workers located in schools and devolved budgets allocated to the front line to ensure funds are targeted where most needed.

A total of £2.4m has been set aside to support the schemes with each local authority involved receiving between £400,000 and £600,000.

Schemes approved in Darlington, Hillingdon and Wigan will allow front line teams to have more say in where funds are spent whilst projects in Lambeth, Southampton and Stockton will see social workers located in schools where they will provide on-site support to families, children and teaching staff.
