The Government is expected to launch a public consultation on unregulated children’s homes which could lead to the banning of their use for under 16’s.
Ministers are expected to announce the consultation within weeks rather than months to help ensure that vulnerable children receive the right support whilst in care placements.
A number of recent reports have triggered alerts highlighting risks from abusers and criminal gangs towards children placed in such settings.
Yvette Stanley, Ofsted’s Director of Social Care said indicated close talks with the Department for Employment were ongoing with the aim of those discussions being “to work out what is the best way forward for this small group of unregistered settings and for 16- and 17-year-old looked-after children as they transition into independent living”.
It is thought that proposals could include the introduction of national standards for providers and how compliance with these would be best monitored
