The government has released its response to a report published by the Education Select Committee in July which highlighted that too many children are being excluded and effectively abandoned in specialist education provision.
Against a backcloth of steadily rising numbers of children in Alternative Provision the report outlines a package of measures intended to help better understand the key issues including a comprehensive review to look at how schools are using exclusions, the impact on those who are excluded and why certain groups are disproportionately affected.
The review will engage with parents, schools, local authorities and a wide range of organisations to understand their views on these issues
The issue of incentivising schools to create an inclusive environment for every child, no matter their needs and circumstances is also highlighted.
