Kent County Council – Speech, language and communication needs (SLCN)

Interface delivered a series of full day SLCN awareness sessions and half-day screening sessions to youth justice practitioners across the county. The aim of sessions was to increase awareness of SLCNs and confidence within staff to tailor interventions to address this specific need. The interactive sessions were delivered using videos, quizzes, and case studies to explore the key themes which included:

  • How other factors impact on communication skills and the impact of the criminal justice system (CJS)
  • The communication model and the factors that are relevant, e.g. understanding, expressing yourself and pragmatics
  • The language strategies, visual cues and written strategies that can be employed to reduce the complexity with which we communicate
