Figures released by the Department of Education show a "dramatic" rise in the number of children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND) accessing early education.
Whilst the numbers have been gradually rising since 2010 latest data shows a 11.3% rise in the 12 months to January 2018.
Children aged 11-15 years old accounted for the largest percentage of children and young people with statements (46.8%), EHC plans (35.5%) and for combined statements and EHC plans (36.7%).
Commentators are warning that the escalation in these numbers is leading to a funding crisis in the sector with local authority budgets now stretched to the limit.
