Government Issues New Screen Time Guidance for Under-5s
The UK government has published new national guidance advising that screen time should be avoided for children under two, except for shared activities that encourage interaction and bonding, such as video calls or looking at family photos together. For children aged two to five, parents are advised to aim for no more than one hour of screen time a day where possible.
The guidance, developed with input from child health and early years experts, also recommends avoiding screens during mealtimes and in the hour before bedtime, while encouraging parents to prioritise slow-paced, age-appropriate content and shared viewing rather than passive or solitary use. The advice forms part of a wider government focus on children’s wellbeing and online safety, amid growing concern about the impact of excessive screen use on sleep, language development, physical activity and social interaction in early childhood.
Importantly, the guidance acknowledges that some children with SEND may rely on screen-based assistive technology, and states these should not be subject to blanket restrictions. The approach is intended as practical support for parents rather than rigid rules, with an emphasis on healthy routines, play, communication and family interaction.
