Murder of Raneem Oudeh prompts new scheme to reduce violence against women and girls
The murder of Raneem Oudeh by her ex-husband despite her calling 999 four times in one night has prompted the launch of a new scheme which will see domestic abuse specialists embedded in 999 control rooms.
The initiative is part of the government's pledge to halve violence against women and girls in the next decade and will see the specialists advising police on risk assessments and working with officers on the ground. They will have a team assisting them to improve how police respond to domestic violence calls around the clock.
Wendy Weal, Interface’s Managing Director, said “We are delighted that the home secretary is to spearhead a cross government approach to tackling violence against women and girls.
One of its first steps they announced a new initiative to ensure calls for help are treated with the urgency needed, with victims getting support straight away.
In addition, we feel that significant training is required across the country at various levels from frontline to more specialist support. This is something as an organisation we are committed to look at.”
