Parenting Disabled Children & Young People Practice Guide now available

We know that parenting a disabled child or young person can be rewarding but it often requires intensive and targeted support throughout childhood, sometimes into adulthood. Parent carers often face burnout and can be overwhelmed by conflicting advice.

Commissioned by the Department for Education, the latest Practice Guide has evidenced-based recommendations for senior leaders and practitioners to inform the design and delivery of support for parent carers, to improve outcomes for children and young people with disabilities and SEN.

The Practice Guide findings show that evidence-based parenting support can:

📍 Improve language and communication
📍 Reduce behavioural challenges
📍 Improve child development and cognitive skills
📍 Improve parent-child interaction
📍 Reduce parental stress and increase parental confidence
📍 Improve parental wellbeing and parenting practices.
