Non practising social workers urged to return to the profession

The Department of Education has called upon children’s social workers who are not currently practising to return to the profession temporarily to relieve pressures caused by the pandemic.

The call was made by Children’s Minister, Will Quince, who said “Many local workforces are facing pressure due to Covid-19 so we need those who can, to consider stepping forward to support them, and most importantly our vulnerable families.”

Whilst non-employed social workers would normally need to take refresher training if they have not practised before being able to return to the profession the Minister announced that “Social workers with temporary registration status can apply for roles with local authorities, health trusts and other employers in England, helping to protect the public amidst staff shortages”.

He added ““If you can support on a temporary basis, we would encourage you to contact your local authority or sign up with a local agency.”
