Pay and working conditions lead to a dramatic reduction in the number of early years workers

A new study by the National Centre for Social Research has highlighted the current crisis within the early years’ workforce.

With significant numbers leaving the profession the study highlights the challenges to staff recruitment and retention with Inadequate Pay and  Low Professional Status quoted as major barriers. Emotional and physical labour aspects of the work and the level of flexibility are also highlighted.

The report sets out the following three key recommendations for change:

  • Improving retention and professional pathways
  • Professionalising roles
  • Attaching more value to the profession
