Spending cuts to blame for children’s mental health

The BPS (British Psychological Society) said the Government’s green paper published in December, was reactive and that mental health problems are within a child rather than external social factors.

Whilst the green paper outlines plans to incentivise every school and college in England to appoint a designated senior lead for mental health the BPS said this plan fails to address the major determinants of poor mental health – poverty, social inequality poor housing and degraded communities.

Please find the BPS’s response to the government’s transformation of children’s mental health response here. It promotes a more holistic and systemic approach and asks for more emphasis on preventative measures.
