Level 4 Unit 400 Award - Build and maintain relationships in work with parents and families

This one unit (Unit 400) Award unit provided through the City and Guilds of London Institute meets the needs of a wide range of practitioners providing support to parents and families. It is also one of three units making up the larger Level 4 Award in Work with Parents (intense support for families with multiple and complex needs).

It provides a solid grounding in engagement activity which is central to a range of support roles. As with the larger level 4 Award, it is supported by a comprehensive Learner Resource which can also be used as a practice support handbook for staff.  Duration of the learning part of this course can be tailored to suit local need, though a four to six week period is recommended. The assessment requirement can take longer to complete and will reflect individual learner need.

The Award is supported through our comprehensive Learner Resource which we have developed to address the learning outcomes and assessment criteria of the Award.  We regularly update this to reflect recent changes in policy and practice. The Learner Resource covers far more than the content of the Award itself and therefore provides a long term comprehensive handbook and reference tool.

The programme is particularly suited to those working with and supporting families with complex needs and is aimed at:

  • Experienced practitioners looking for accreditation of their skills, knowledge and competence.
  • Newly appointed and developing practitioners.
  • Newly created teams and developing teams.
  • Practitioners requiring refresher training in supporting families with multiple and complex needs.

Units and Learning Outcomes

Learning Outcomes

  1. Understand the principles and values that underpin work with parents (and families).
  2. Understand the nature of an effective relationship with parents.
  3. Understand how barriers to participation for parents can be overcome.
  4. Understand how to negotiate and/or agree the basis of relationships with parents.
  5. Understanding how to agree the boundaries of the relationship.
  6. Understand how to maintain the relationship with parents.
  7. Understand how to reflect on own practice in building and maintaining relationships with parents.

Assessment

Learners will be registered with City and Guilds through an independent assessment centre.  We will support each learner individually and we like to provide a course information and assessment ‘briefing session’ for potential learners and their manager(s). 

Assessment includes:

  • Briefing/induction sessions for prospective learners and managers.
  • Four face-to-face training delivery days per course.
  • 1-1 discussion with trainer/ assessor before course to ascertain individual/ specific learning and support needs.
  • Provision of worksheets during training for learner use during group activities – specifically designed to capture relevant knowledge and information to support assignments.
  • Assessor workplace observation visits of each candidate and provision of relevant reports.
  • A recorded discussion with each learner to replace some written assignments and provision of relevant reports/ audio record timings mapped to assessment criteria.  Important: Additional recorded discussions may be carried out for learners with additional/ special learning needs – e.g. dyslexic learners.
  • Support and guidance for managers/ supervisors regarding the provision of witness statements which contribute to workplace observations/ evidence for assessment.
  • Ongoing telephone and email support and feedback on assessment.
  • A telephone support ‘helpline’ available one evening per week.
  • Portfolio support.
  • City and Guilds registration, certification and assessment centre costs, including internal verification and quality assurance activities.
