Sexual abuse - understanding and working with childhood sexual abuse

This course provides staff with knowledge and understanding of CSA as well as the skills to recognise and effectively handle disclosures of historic and present abuse.

Learning Outcomes

  • Explore expectations and fears. 
  • Examine what is meant by sexual abuse, including sexual exploitation, its prevalence and impact on children.
  • Consider the indicators of sexual abuse and sexual exploitation and the parameters of assessment.
  • Reflect on the reasons children may not disclose and the impacts on practitioners of working with suspicions of sexual abuse or exploitation.
  • Discuss how to respond to disclosures, within the context of best practice and the legal framework.
  • To reflect on Safer Working issues and the implications for their own practice
