Contextual Safeguarding - Virtual Training

Young people form different relationships in the home, with their peers, in their neighbourhoods and in school. Understanding the ‘context’ in which young people encounter harm is central to your ability to provide effective safeguarding.

We provide a training programme over a series of 4 action learning sets covering:

Session 1

  • Research, principles and theory underpinning contextual safeguarding
  • How different places, spaces and groups help to create safety or add risk to young people’s lives
  • The evidence for a new approach to protecting young people

Session 2

The strengths and risks associated with the contextual safeguarding themes (part 1):

  • Young people (identity, culture, trauma, resilience)
  • Home (impact of substance misuse, mental health, domestic abuse, neglect and poverty)

Session 3

The strengths and risks associated with the contextual safeguarding themes (part 2):

  • Peers (belonging, affirmation, bullying, social media)
  • Neighbourhood (gangs, crime, exploitation)

Session 4

  • School/college/individuals: (Mapping hotspots; assessing strengths and risk; planning for change; new partnership working)

It will be run over a period of time and include training sessions on line, interactive group discussion/reflections, videos and worksheets and a small amount of homework.
