Family Group Decision Making Training

Family Group Decision Making (FGDM) places families and their wider networks at the centre of decisions that affect their lives, building on family strengths and supporting families to develop their own solutions and plans.

Our 2-day skills-based Family Group Decision Making training develops the practical skills and confidence practitioners need to work collaboratively with families, facilitate effective family meetings and embed family-led decision-making within everyday practice.

The programme supports practitioners to:

• Understand the principles and values underpinning Family Group Decision Making
• Work in partnership with families to identify strengths, concerns and risks
• Engage and involve wider family networks in decision-making
• Prepare for and facilitate effective family meetings
• Empower families to develop their own solutions and plans
• Develop realistic, achievable and family-centred SMART plans
• Manage challenge, resistance and difficult conversations
• Work effectively with multi-agency partners towards shared decisions and plans
• Apply relational and strengths-based approaches throughout the process

Family Group Decision Making has particular relevance to the Families First reforms, with their increased emphasis on family-led decision-making and involving wider family networks in planning and support. Our training can support local authorities to develop the skills and confidence needed to embed FGDM principles within Family Help and wider children's services practice.

Family Group Decision Making or Family Group Conferencing?

Our Family Group Decision Making training is designed for the wider workforce and develops the skills to embed family-led decision-making within everyday practice and family meetings.
