First Line Management Development Programme

Practical skills and confident leadership for those working in family help and children’s services

First line managers are the bridge between frontline practitioners and senior leaders. They shape culture, ensure service quality, and provide the supervision and support that keeps practice safe and effective.

Often they step into these roles without structured development or the confidence to lead. This programme equips them with the tools, knowledge, and mindset to succeed – strengthening services today and building future leaders for tomorrow.

This programme is designed specifically for managers in children’s services and family help settings.

Rather than a “one size fits all” course, we work closely with you to design a programme that meets your needs. From the choice of modules to the length and format of delivery, we’ll agree the structure together to ensure it reflects your priorities and context.

Each session is grounded in the real-world challenges managers face, providing practical approaches they can apply immediately.

Key areas include:

  • The role of a manager in children’s services
  • Building effective teams and managing performance
  • Supervision and staff support
  • Managing upwards and influencing decision-making
  • Accountability and defensible decision-making
  • Coaching and reflective conversations
  • Using data effectively to drive improvement
  • Change management and motivating others

Delivery options: Short, focused workshops or longer, in-depth development pathways – delivered in-person or online.
