Level 4 Certificate - Working with Children, Individuals and Families

This course leads to a qualification which is regulated by OFQUAL. It is a 15 credit Level 4 qualification consisting of 3 units and is run either face to face or virtually.

 

This OFQUAL-regulated Level 4 qualification is designed for practitioners who work directly with children, individuals and families, particularly those experiencing complex or multiple needs.

The programme equips practitioners with the knowledge, practical tools and confidence to work effectively with families, build strong relationships and support sustainable change.

It focuses on the real challenges faced by frontline staff working within Early Help, Family Hubs, targeted support and voluntary sector services.

What the Programme Covers

The course focuses on developing the core knowledge, skills and practice required to work effectively with families experiencing complex needs.

Participants explore engagement, assessment, planning and supporting sustainable change while developing greater confidence in working with families and multi-agency partners.

Units 

Engagement and Communication - Building Effective Relationships

This unit explores the core principles of engaging effectively with all members of the family.

Learners develop knowledge and practical skills in:

  • building safe and effective relationships
  • balancing support with challenge
  • working within appropriate professional boundaries
  • understanding attachment and its impact
  • recognising individual needs and promoting equality of opportunity

Participants gain the confidence and skills required to engage families and support them towards positive change.

Assessment, Tools and Planning

This unit focuses on developing strong assessment and planning skills when working with individuals and families.

Learners explore:

  • gathering and analysing assessment information
  • working collaboratively with families and professionals
  • developing clear and effective support plans
  • using tools to understand family circumstances
  • developing and reviewing SMART plans
  • participating in and chairing Team Around the Family meetings

Participants also explore the value of case consultation and reflective practice in strengthening professional decision-making.

Supporting family members towards independence and self – reliance

This unit explores the underlying factors that can lead individuals and families to require support services.

Learners develop their understanding of:

  • cycles of need and entrenched disadvantage
  • questioning techniques that support change
  • motivating families towards learning, employment and independence
  • outcomes-focused practice
  • encouraging families to engage with universal services
  • supporting long-term, sustainable change

The unit strengthens practitioners’ ability to help families build resilience and become more connected within their communities.

Learning Approach

The programme combines practical training with structured learning and workplace application. It includes:

  • interactive training sessions
  • a comprehensive workbook and professional guidance materials
  • workplace-based learning
  • a bespoke real-time work project linked to the learner’s own practice or service
  • reflective practice to embed learning
  • individual tutor and assessor support

Learners apply their learning directly in their professional role, ensuring that the programme strengthens both individual practice and outcomes for families.

Delivery Options

Most programmes are delivered in-house for organisations, allowing content to reflect local practice models and workforce priorities.
