This is one our most popular areas of training. We have delivered to over 1200 learners in this area across a range of children and family services, schools, housing providers and many more. We bespoke each course to meet your needs.
For those wanting to work effectively with individuals and families with multiple and complex needs we know that you need to bring about change and improvements in outcomes. Using these approaches is a powerful technique in bringing about behaviour change.

We have a range of delivery options:
1 day introductory course
Providing the knowledge and awareness of how to use motivational approaches as a technique, consider the cycle of change, use tools and consider how to work with resistance and ambivalence.
2/3 day course
Covering initial relationship building with a client to enhance engagement and lay building blocks for more challenging conversations
- Building rapport with clients, coming alongside them, building trust and determining readiness to change
- Non-judgemental practice and unconditional positive regard
- Key principles of motivational interviewing/influencing approaches
- Open ended questions, affirmations, reflective listening and summaries (OARS)
- Statements of desire, ability, reasons and need to change (DARN) and recognising indicators of commitment, activation and taking steps to change (CAT).
- Communication cycle
- Noting discrepancy between the client’s goals/targets and their current behaviour/actions
- Avoiding argument, challenge and confrontation
- Preventing things becoming worse
- Adjusting to the clients’ resistance and supporting self-efficacy and optimism by eliciting and amplifying strengths
- Breaking down tasks into manageable goals that match the clients’ motivation statements and current skills
- Creating meaningful plans
- Plenty of skills practice
This is a CPD accredited course.
Participants will receive a certificate of completion with a CPD accredited logo confirming the contribution towards their continued professional development.
WorkshopsOur experience shows that to embed this in the workplace learners need to continually practice. We can also provide a range of embedding workshops for practitioners which include an opportunity for refection, challenge and support around skills, discussion of cases and approaches and more practice. |
